In 2006, Bono, humanitarian and lead singer of the band U2, was quoted saying that society basically knows nothing about "justice"; he described justice as a true selfless dedication to a cause, while charity as just a single action that makes no real difference, something that people do just to feel good about themselves. Bono (in all of his humility) failed to acknowledge that justice begins with charity, and consistent charity starts with a single selfless act. Although I don't completely agree with his statement when it comes to the worth of charity, I do feel his sentiment. Sometimes selflessness is harder to find than refreshing drink of pure water in the thick of the sahara. Many people give only to receive, with the sole intention of banking in on some sort of benefit. Selflessness is made out to be this profoundly difficult concept when giving for the sake of improving the lives of others is actually as easy as integrating a single charitable purpose with your daily passions.
Fashion
Designer Abi Ferrin's Fall 2010 line is free spirited and daring, mixing classic fabric cuts and drapery, bold prints, and tribal accents. Now known for her popular "5 way top", Ferrin quit her sales job after her work was noticed during an industry party at Kitson Boutique, and began satisfying her aspirations to become a designer. Her line, which has been featured in US Weekly, Lucky and D Magazine is effortlessly stylish. My personal favorite is the holly dress, smooth red color and asymmetrical lines complemented by a chic belt that adorns the waistline; it's these unique accessories that make the Abi Ferrin line a stylish brand of philanthropic proportions.
Freedom
The Designer gives back through the Abi Ferrin Freedom Project and her partnership with Gods Green America which "mobilizes green accountability" and supports her efforts in creating eco friendly clothing. The freedom project "focuses on providing oppressed women with; training, fair pay, food and shelter" while giving them the chance to practice their craft by hand making the cultural details seen in her collection. "The micro-businesses that are created due to this training also fund foster care and quality education for children rescued from slavery, women and children rescued from prostitution, and other abusive environments." The Freedom Project is primarily based at Guardian Village in Nepal, but Ferrin is currently extending the proceeds from her brand to orphan rescue organization Vision Trust, continuing the trend of using her passion for a greater purpose.

Ferrin was able to realize her artistic dream, thus give to the lives of others through an investment from Texas Next Top Designer (Texas' very own "Project Runway" sans "reality" TV cameras). The 2007 title winner proved best in the competition which pits the collections of aspiring designers against each other in a series of board examinations that test every facet of their brand from business plans to individual pieces for the chance to win a generous grant and investment support. Last years' winner was lingerie designer Megan Summerville, an innovator and entrepreneur who has been featured in D magazine for her bridal line Something Blue, and the recipient of Austin's Love a Local Business grant.This year Red iD Agency is hosting an event to display the submissions of TNTD hopefuls before the competition commences and they've decided to open it up to the public.

Win Tickets to the Feel Good fashion.music.art Event
Next weekend, Saturday 22, Red iD Agency will be hosting fashion music.art to give everyone a peek at this years' contestants' entry pieces. The runway show and feel good event will commence to the sounds of DJ and musician Danny Garcia (has spun for The Roots percussionist ?uest Love among many others) who will be spinning tracks throughout the night in Dallas' 25,000 sq ft. Zouk club. As if this couldn't get any sweeter...the work of emerging visual artists’ Chris Cast, Alonzo Smith III, and Tuan Vu will also be on display during the event.
I'm expecting this show to be near to fashion week proportions. I'm interested in seeing what these competitors are going to bring to the table, judging by the work of Abi Ferrin, this show is going to be seriously dope...

A journey bound by both humility and love, pressing her bare feet against a road that is sometimes dirty with “selfishness, greed” and pain sharp enough to break her skin, but she continues to push forward, not for her own benefit, but for the sake of the hearts and spirits of others. A true personification of some of the scarcest positive qualities found on earth, Karen knows her purpose in this world and strives to make each moment about something greater than her own desires.
“As individuals we should all do our little part.”
She creates art to inspire everyone to create some level of positive change in their life and in the lives of those around them. Everyone has a greater purpose, and she works to “look at the divine in every person [she meets] rather than criticize or judge” because we all have something good within our hearts to give. “We’re all contagious in one way or another”, you don’t need a title or an abundance of money to change the world, like “checkers at whole foods” we posses some of the greatest “energy and power.” She explains that each day people who work at registers make more than just a monetary exchange, they come in contact with more individuals than those who spend their days behind computers and in boardrooms and they can make a substantial positive influence on the hundreds of people that they meet each day.
“I have been on that path of selfishness and greed, power and money”, but that only led her to think that everything that was important to her at that time didn’t “cut it” anymore. Though a manifestation of six years of meditation and over 30 years of artistic experience and journalism, Karen “recognized the power art has to influence the world”, she began to want more from life and ultimately she began wanting more for others. With all of the deadlines, bills, consumption, and monetary requirements we consistently endure or are accustomed to it’s hard to focus on giving to others, but when we all embrace our purpose with selflessness, honesty and love it will lead to a level of security, completeness and faith that cannot be supplied by possession. The intricacies of this world are a part of a greater sphere, everything repeats itself; life, death, history, but eternal phenomena like love are never-ending, they can only grow if nourished or dwindle if ignored.

DJ B3 (Bryan Gonzalez) was definitely in the mix at Karen Blessen's benefit ball this Saturday. While laying down his mixes in the comfortably dim Mokah Lounge, one could tell he definitely knew what he was doing.
Art Star: How did you come to play at this event?”
B3: “Well, I’m pretty close to Johnny (Jonathan Merla) and he asked me if I would play… We actually play in a band together.”

B3: Yes, it’s called Mayta.
B3 has played in every major club in Dallas, and even some in San Francisco. Talk about legit. However, he prefers to play private and special events, “because they are more enjoyable and you don’t have to play what they want you to play,” they being the club owners.

B3: Well, if I had to choose three, right now, my number one would be this band I’ve been following for the past ten years. They’re called The Mars Volta.

We went on discussing their insanely good music and the bizarre happenings from their shows, for instance, getting crushed by the crowd, and watching security pull a trampled and bloody girl off the ground. “They bring chaos wherever they go,” added B3.
Next on his list was Madlib, a DJ whom requires no digital equipment to lay down hit beats. This is something any DJ can admire.
Last on his list was DJ Markey, a drum and bass artist from Brazil. “He got together with a lot of drummers from Brazil and laid down some tracks with all of them,” enthusiastically stated B3. I got online to check out his stuff, and might I add, it was fantastic. It’s evident Markey loves his drums.

“Sex Rock,” is what front man, Rob Dunlap calls Hello Lover. When I asked these gentlemen who some of their major influences were, one replied, “It’s hard to say, because we all like different music.”
“Rob likes The Smiths; he’s a big fan of Morrissey,” said drummer Joe Hardy.When I told them the song Incredible Relief reminds me of the theme song for the television show Charmed. Rob replied, “Oh, that’s actually a cover of a song by The Smiths.”
When I asked how they came to play this event, they all said, “Nomad Arts with Tom Curry.” Nomad Arts is a full service event design and planning firm.
Hello Lover has taken the stage with Vanilla Ice, The Riverboat Gamblers, The Bellrays, and the Architects. It’s amazing how we never hear about these artists, even when they play with Vanilla Ice, and the Bellrays.
While onstage, you can tell these guys take their music seriously, yet still have fun. And who else may have been having fun? The lovely ladies dancing to their favorite Hello Lover tracks, as they performed.
Hello Lover did not fail to mention their latest album, Mix Tape, was released this past year, so you guys should definitely check it out. They also released a video for the track, Start Again. The guitar sounds magical and a bit more modern, as apposed to their usual 90’s Rock sound.
