There's nothing cool like a female MC bold enough to step up in the male dominated rap scene.
Kid Sister is a Chicago based rapper who creates music for the dance floor, known for her 2008 track Pro-Nails ft. Kanye West, she has recently debuted her first mixtape KissKissKiss.
Kid Sister has an 80's hip-hop/techno sound, like a mix between Ke$ha and Diamond. Although I have my qualms with many female rappers who opt for materialistic or hyper-sexualized and self-centered images instead of using their work to preempt positive change, I recognize that it's got to be tough out there for them, trying to be everything to everyone while having to deal with the dilemma faced by most modern artists today: make art that's meaningful or make art that sells?
Kid Sister has obviously decided that getting people to dance is what matters most. I'm a pretty big fan of 80's rap/fashion and the Chicago music scene so her latest single "Right Hand Hi" is right up my alley. Although some of her lyrics are a bit materialistic, she makes fun music I can dance to, whether I'm with my girls or dancing in my room while trying on my "at home/girls-only" party dresses .

During my first semester in college I took what I felt was a warranted and appropriate hiatus. I was exhausted by my surroundings, and I needed an escape. I plunged head first into isolation, chilling, yet not nearly as cold as what I was trying to get away from...
I spent the first nine years of my life as an only child, so I didn't find it difficult to spend time alone growing as a person and re-establishing my priorities. I'm creative soul, an artist, and I credit my creativity to most of my time alone as a child which led to uninhibited thinking and imagination.
Some consider isolation unhealthy,others aren't sincerely happy so they use outside interaction as a means of fulfillment. Some frown upon such individuality because they are afraid that this type independence will lead to loneliness and certain individuals are simply fearful of being exposed to their own thoughts. But I believe that these meditations are invaluable, because they are your own unique thoughts, and lead to an expansion in the products of the mind.
I consider these same concepts prevalent in the idea of hiatus.
Sometimes we all just need to get away in order to evaluate and process life.

My theory?
Once I expel the weeds, thorns will choke no more.
This proved to be true.
I could contemplate with a sense of clarity that made me look towards the components of my life with a keen eye.I was figuring out who I am and why I am who I am.I could immediately look towards what I may have perceived as failure in the past and understand why I had to “fail” in terms of the present.
After recuperation my vision began unveil itself again. I was working towards my goals, expanding myself creatively, understanding the life I wanted to live and enjoying it completely.My time slots began to fill, I was working. I was creating, learning, loving and I was doing it better than before.
I had taken a break from certain parts of my life to establish new paths.

Hiatus is something kanYe West and I have in common.
My hiatus procured an expansion of creativity, his led to creative genius.
If you remember Kanye's state before his disappearance, he wasn't exactly coherent.People try to make his virtual disappearance all about his outburst at the VMA's.
They fail to consider all of the issues.
kanYe seemed to be lost, pulled in a million different directions, unsure of what to do with his fame, entourage and assets (as most celebrities are), and he had just lost his mother in response to an act often seen in the world of the "Rich & Famous".

PEOPLE TRY TO PAINT 'YE AS A DOUCHE
forgetting how much they loved "Through The Wire", "All Falls Down" and the overall humble hip-hop artist that accompanied his first album The College Dropout.
"We" always tend to forget the good times in lieu of the bad, and for some reason I think Kanye did too, so he had to disappear, to find himself, to find something real.
I think we can all relate to this.
When 'Ye fell into oblivion he was missed (at least by me). Everyone knew he would come back, they just couldn't wait to see what he had up his sleeve.
What we found is that kanYe had been working on something that was so damn good many couldn't comprehend it because it had never been done.
MY BEAUTIFUL DARK TWISTED FANTASY:
When I first heard the track for Power I thought it was nice.Decent.
A 4 minute and 52 second purge about how he couldn't control his "Power" and people didn't understand him,classic 'Ye. But when I saw the video for the single I was taken to a totally different place. A 2 minute allegory encapsulating the fall of man, and the temptations that take him down. A moving reference to the Sistine Chapel. GENIUS.
Then 'Ye made a highly anticipated comeback at the MTV awards performing "Runaway" (appropriately titled). I was unsure of how I felt about the track and the performance. It was sloppy, it seemed thrown together hours before the show (it probably was). I didn't like it, but I wanted to.
The autotune, protune, 808 combination was a little played. The performance overall was original, but something was left to be desired. I just couldn't put my finger on it.
It was Ye's performances at Saturday Night Live that made it apparent that he was back, and fresher than before.He set the stage and once again proved that he wasn't just another rapper. He had taken both Power and Runaway to the next level, a level that only the greats achieve.
The greats that can sell out arenas during a recession.
The type of artists that spark creativity in others.
The artists that begin a culture, and not the shallow type of culture he created with Graduation (and those annoying shutter shades), something greater.
The performances were the perfect juxtaposition, kanYe and his personality in an all red suit, and a stage full of ballerinas clad in white. The metaphorical beauty of the entire piece from start to finish was sort of indescribable. While watching I could literally feel my pupils dilate.
I was witnessing what I consider to be pure genius, after hiatus.
"A beautiful death", an evolutionary rebirth.

As a film buff and de facto cuter half of the Art Star film boys, I spend far too little time looking at music videos. With respect to Katelin's essay on Lady Gaga, I stopped paying attention somewhere between illicit nights watching BET Uncut and a confusing first impression of Tokio Hotel, which is a damn shame because some great things have been happening.
We've all been saturated with Gaga's "Bad Romance" inundated with Ok Go's "Here It Goes Again," and plenty of us saw Kanye's "Flashing Lights" (nsfw), but who remembers when he dropped "Paranoid" (one word: Rihanna), or when Mos slipped "Supermagic" beneath the aural doorjamb? For this reason, I've resolved to put some added purpose behind my Google searches, and will be on the lookout for new videos from now on. Sharing with you is sharing with myself, and who isn't down for a five minute sip of something sweet and avant garde?
Dub, you're onto something when you note how Max's very presence among the wild things is what exacerbates the brewing tensions between them. I further agree that this realization was largely behind his decision to leave for home, as things were rough with his sand-blooded pals at first, but he handled the pressure well. It takes a tough kid to look up into faces that could (and do) swallow him whole, and want to not only befriend them, but be their king. That blind willingness to set aside fear in favor of awe and cooperation is what makes children special; its a quality more adults should share when dealing with their own issues.
Yet I have to say that asking, as you do, how these dark, angry tensions could come from a kid misses the point. While I stand by my position that (older) children have some great qualities we could all learn from, they've always had a capacity for cruelty and irrationality borne of fear or the suggestion of inferior difference. They know how to split into "good guys and bad guys." To that end, I'd say it makes perfect sense that bringing an angry and misunderstood Max into a limitless fantasy world would manifest his worst along with his best; it was inevitable. Especially in a world full of freakin' monsters.
As I said last week, the best children's stories are the ones serving as allegories for the struggles adults face as well, and there's nothing more universal to adults than the internal struggle to keep your world at peace despite the warring emotions inside you. Max experiencing the conflict first hand and in a very literal fashion was a pretty brilliant stroke of filmmaking, even if it takes a little while for the message to sink in.

SmartBlackBoy: I can't get Lady Gaga's Paparazzi song and performance out of my head. There is a moment where she is heartbreakingly vulnerable and vacant all at the same time that makes me want to cream my pants. Seriously has there been a better mainstream pop star divette who is so alluring weird?
WHayes: Well, since we're being blunt with our imagery, I didn't get quite the cream-worthy response, or the vulnerable moment: vulnerability isn't something I typically look for in stage performers. Their job is based around the logic of publicly appearing as a fusion of everything every fan wants them to be. Now, this does allow for Gaga to be vulnerable, since SBB can successfully project his wants onto her silver screen like everyone else. Ambiguous subjectivity. This is the same reason why, instead of focusing on Gaga, I took notice of her dancers clothing, specifically the black dude next to her who was wearing lace panties as a mask. This is where I say something about high art routinely emasculating black male performers, because -- if Gaga represents the intersection between high art and pop culture -- that's exactly what that was.
Here's the question: for all of her calculated allure and eccentricity, which was the more talked about subject 'Taylorgate,' or Gaga's outfits that night? Which one was more definitive of mainstream pop culture?

Go call your leading behavioral psychologist, take a snap shot of Lady Gaga's face right after she is done playing the piano, and right before the fake blood comes out - and ask them what emotion is on her face. Face sequencing is 98% accurate and my favorite PhD candidate said the emotion was vulnerability.

WHayes: The image is symptomatic of why they hate us: a renowned-for-being-cocky black dude traipsing all over the virginal beauty of America's blonde sweetheart just stirs up a lot of bad mojo. It's why women in Los Angeles suddenly stare at the ground when I pass them in the street. Granted, every woman has a right and reason to protect herself, but we'd be kidding ourselves to believe that (despite what S.E. Cupp says) part of that isn't racially motivated. Black dudes get it, asian dudes get it.
Nevertheless, motherfucker should have known better than to mess with her in that setting. Doing it to Fall Out Boy is fine, but cross the gender/race-boundary, and you instantly become a meme. A meme that draws the Bull Connor out of otherwise civil white folks. Gaga will (thankfully) never dissolve into a meme, not until she gloriously flames-out on stage within the next 10 years (she's 23, so she's got time). It'll be either 1) a reenactment of the VMA performance in which she actually does stab herself to death, or 2) something involving arsenic and Philip Glass' "The Grid" played on unaccompanied piano, the pace gradually slowing as her heart stops beating.
Also, aside from Michelle being in Copenhagen advocating that the 2016 Olympics be held in Chicago, and Joe nearly getting blown up, what happened?

OK...so when I heard the 808's & Heartbreaks album for the 1st time, when "Street Lights" came on, I immediately envisioned Grand Theft Auto (with a car driving through one of the cities during the night time). Fast foward 7 months later and my vision has turned into a music video!!! Kanye uses animation for this video just like he did for "Heartless", and honestly I really like how it was made. The graphics are very intricate and it matches the music perfectly (unlike some music videos that have been released lately *coughs Best I Ever Had*) What I also noticed is that in all the 808's & Heartbreaks videos, (except for "Love Lockdown") Kanye has limited to no appearances in it...I wonder if that was done purposely.

This video has a dope concept, similar to the Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" video, but with more video effects. The video is not actually based on the song, but somehow fits perfectly with it. I must say Kanye's videos are always on point.
KiD CuDi "Day N Nite" Directed by So-Me
In my blog about "Hip-Hop Artists" to watch for, [click here] I mentioned Kid CuDi. He is slowly but surely stepping into the spotlight. His single "Day N Nite" is doing well on the radio right now, and this video is only creating more buzz for the singer/rapper.
Young Jeezy "Circulate" Directed by Gabriel Hart & Terry Richardson
Young Jeezy's album "The Recession" has really grown on me since I have become tired of Lil' Wayne's "Tha Carter III". [As is the case for Lil' Wayne] Young Jeezy is not the best rapper lyrically, but Jeezy's flow and "swagger" on a song makes it hot. It is more of a street album, and it gets my adrenaline rushing. The song "Circulate" has a Curtis Mayfield sort of feel to it; and on the song Jeezy relates money to: himself, the average woman/man, and to America & its economic problems. I like how the video is shot, and the message that Jeezy is sending: don't worry about spending your money unnecessarily, just have a good time while doing it.
Cam'ron "I Hate My Job" Off Crime Pays dropping 4/21
Cam'ron "I Used To Get It In Ohio" Directed By Duane "Bang" Holmes
I also mentioned Cam'ron in "Hip-Hop Artists To Watch Out For". I knew Crime Pays was coming out this year, and if Cam was coming back, he had to knock this album out the park. The first video "I Hate My Job" has a laid back and optimistic feel to it, while the second video "I Used To Get It In Ohio" is more street themed. I like both videos and the idea that Cam is back in the game.
At first, I was not buying the whole Rockstar Wayne thing, as a matter of fact...I'm still not. I did not even like this song that much because the concept of the song has been recycled so many times. Nevertheless, after I watched the video, it made me feel differently. Dave Myers is an excellent video director, and he made the song seem "hot" for the moment. I don't know about rushing to download this song (much less the album), but this video is good (in my opinion).
Today, Novemer 24, 2008, KanYe West will be releasing his 4th album. Last year, KanYe's 3rd album, Graduation was up against 50 Cent's Curtis. KanYe outsold 50's album 957,000 copies to 691,000 copies in the 1st week. This year, he is up against another hip-hop heavywieght: Ludacris. Will he do it again against the self-proclaimed Undisputed Champion of Hip-Hop?
Throughout this year, KanYe has been through a lot of tragedy. He has been through the loss of his mom, the break up with his fiance, and still had to find time to do The Glow in the Dark tour, around the world. On 808's and Heartbreak, he writes songs mainly about these things, this time not in the form of bars or creative lyrics, but in what he calls "pop-art". KanYe defines it as, "...a mixed drink. It’s Auto-Tune meets distortion, with a bit of delay on it and a whole bunch of f*cked up life. And that’s what I call my "Heartbreak". And that’s what every record basically has...I’m delivering what I feel like is art, and that’s what I want to deliver from this point on. The records I’m doing right now might not have high hats and sh*t like everything else has...On this record I’m trying to improve my craft and take it a level that no n***a ever made it to."
Songs such as "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless" shows the state of mind that KanYe is in and it is most definitely different than anything that I ever heard.
I've had the pleasure of hearing this album in its entirety. For the most part it grows on me everytime I hear it. I think its the most different transition an artist has made and it can be compared to the emotion of a Gnarls Barkley record. I can feel and relate to what KanYe is talking about in his songs. People need to give this album a chance and stop putting it down because he doesn't rap on this. Yes, it is all singing from Ye on this album. He has 2 guest appearances from Young Jeezy (who does rap on the song "Amazing") and Lil Wayne (who continues to autotune on the song "See You In My Nightmares". I would say you could not compare this album to Ye's others; and as a fan of MUSIC, I would say that it is better than the average material that comes from some of our veteran artists in the game. TODAY, ON NOVEMBER 24TH, I WILL BE BUYING THIS ALBUM...
Ludacris has created a lot of buzz over the summer with his outspoken views on the election, on the song "Politics as Usual". His mixtape with DJ Drama, The Preview, is one of my favorite mixtapes of this year. He could have made that mixtape into an album and I would have been happy.Theater of the Mind is very complete and has a guest appearance on each song. I can put this album up there with LAX and Untitled. If you are a fan of witty punchlines or just real hip-hop, Luda gives it to you from start to finish. The album has guest appearances from: T.I., Plies, Floyd Mayweather, Willy Northpole (be on the lookout for this guy), The Game, T-Pain, Nas, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Chris Rock, Ving Rhames, Playaz Circle, Chris Brown, Sean Garrett, Jamie Foxx, Lil' Wayne, Common, and Spike Lee. I might say that this is Ludacris's best album if not top two. One can tell that, the time he took off was to put everything he had into this album. I'm pretty sure that any hip-hop fan will be able to appreciate Luda's new album and not regret buying it. I WILL ALSO BE COPPING THIS ALBUM TODAY...
I PREDICT THAT...
Ye will do better, numbers wise because of his bigger fan base. I also think that people will underestimate both albums, but I'm telling you that there is no reason why you should. There is so much emotion on both albums, and both albums got pushed back for a reason. They wanted to make sure that everything was complete and that it was the right time to put out their work.
1st week- Ye: 751,000 copies - Luda: 491,000
I think both Ye will go platinum 2nd or 3 week, and by Christmas Luda will go platinum.
I thought it was only right to highlight some talented hip-hop artists who I like, that are up and coming, and who can be the future of what we know as hip-hop.
1. The Cool Kids- My new favorite duo until Outkast comes back out...I like them so much that I have every single track by them and not a single song is a flop. They've been getting buzz from being featured on game soundtracks, performing on late night shows and finally getting play on TV with their new music video: "Delivery Man". They are a MUST check out.
2. Asher Roth- I was a bit skeptical when I first heard this guy spit. I really thought he was just another Eminem wanna-be. But in fact, since I downloaded his mixtape "The Greenhouse Effect" and heard his name being mentioned more and more, I started to see what all the hype was all about and then I was on the Asher Roth bandwagon.

3. Cory Gunz- The way this guy spits is incredible. His freestyles and rapping skills are underrated. If you heard the original "A Milli" version, it really outshined Lil Wayne's verses (which is probably Cory's cut didn't make the album). In spite of all, Cory has a bright future if he keeps putting his name out there and actually makes an album.
4. Curren$y- When I first heard Curren$y, I was not sold. But this was a while back when he was signed to Young Money/Cash Money (Lil' Wayne's record label) ...do you see where there's a pattern? (That's another blog post.) Anyway, I was forced by some friends to hear a song called "Modern Day Hippie". (I thought the song was trash at first). But, it grew on me and I wanted to download the song, but by that time, the song was old; so the only way I could get the song was to download his mixtape called "Fast Times At Ridgemont Fly". (Its in my top 5 mixtapes of the year for a single artist behind Ludacris' "The Preview, Nas' "The N*gger Tape", and The Cool Kids' "Cool Ass Ninjaz" and ahead of Asher Roth's "The Greenhouse Effect") It is a solid mixtape, where he redid some of his favorite songs from other artists in the game. I think some of his remakes might have been better than some of the original versions.

5. Mickey Factz- Mickey Factz was an artist that was associated with The Cool Kids, so I had to check him out. He has the hungriness, that some of our VETERAN artists are missing, and his lyrics make sense :) There's not a bad track that I've heard from him either, but I haven't heard that much material from him though.
6. Wale- Wale has been on the underground scene in Baltimore/D.C. for a while now. He's just waiting for his time to shine or waiting for a big opportunity to be featured on a mainsteam track. I can compare his style to an artist like Lupe Fiasco.
7. Charles Hamilton- This guy brings comedy to his raps, which is what I personally like. Not a lot of people do it, but one person who does it well is Charles Hamilton. He has a song "Neh, Neh, Neh" [*bumps*] w/ Cory Gunz and they both kill it. Cory Gunz goes hard on the track but Charles is right there w/ him and just shows how his style and Cory's contrast, but at the same time the chemistry is there between the two. He also have a song called "Lacey Duvalle" where he talks about being with a porn star. His style is definitely in a word...different (but that's good).

8. Blu- I got put on w/ Blu by one of my colleagues (He's mainly an underground hip-hop DJ and I guarantee that I would be stuck mostly on mainstream rap if it wasn't for him). Anyway this guy can spit. His first album 'Below The Heavens" got a lot of buzz and Blu continues to put out tracks that I like. I can't wait for his next album, because he has a lot of potential.

9. Kidz In The Hall- I swear when I 1st saw the "Drivin' Down The Block" video on BET, I was like who are these two clowns looking like they just came out of an 80's ad, and why are they on BET? So basically, the 1st time I heard it I got a bad impression. Then I went to their myspace and heard some tracks and listened to "Drivin' Down The Block" again... I was amazed. I ended up buying their album and I was not disappointed. They are very innovative with their music with a similar style to The Cool Kids but their rap techniques are totally different. I'm proud to say that they are a part of hip-hop's future.

10. Maino- HI HATER! No, but seriously....if you hated that track during the summer I can understatnd why. But Maino is more than a one hit wonder. He and Kay Slay have done plenty of mixtapes; and since I'm from Brooklyn, I've heard a lot of his music. He just keeps getting better. He has an album coming out soon and I'm looking foward to buying it (and so I can get a free hi-hater shirt. lol

People Who Are Keeping Hip-Hop Alive
1. Lupe Fiasco- I don't know where the game would be w/o Lupe...thats all I have to say and if you don't have any of Lupe's material from mixtapes, "Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor" or "The Cool"...you don't like real hip-hop.
2. Ludacris- Luda always comes back strong and ready to punch somebody's lights out. Like I mentioned above, "The Preview" is my favorite solo artist mixtape for this year. "Theater of the Mind" is going to be crazy and I already know what I can expect from Luda.
3. The Game- I think "LAX" is a classic...yeah I said it! I did not find one flaw in this man's album. It is solid from start to finish and you can bump it straight through.
4. Nas- "Untitled/Nas" was the one of the most anticipated albums of this year. I think it lived up to its expectations. I needed songs like "Hero", "Black President", and "Fried Chicken" in my life. I think Nas will continue to be one of hip-hop's best and keep hip-hop alive.
5. T.I.- I'm still debating if "Paper Trail" is T.I.'s best album, but that's because its so good. I think T.I. is doing a good job and has a few more solid albums in him.
6. David Banner- "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was more than what I was expecting. Not only is this man spitting lyrics hard, but he is independently making beats consistently for himself and other artists in the game.
7. Kanye West- Everyone that knows me, knows that Kanye is my favorite artist. The Glow in the Dark Concert has been very successful and Kanye will continue to reinvent himself each album as we grow on with him as an artist.
8. Black Thought/The Roots- It might not seem like it but The Roots are an essential piece to hip-hop (but they have been and will continue to be). The Roots put out "Rising Down" this year and I was shocked to hear that so many people had it and liked it. These guys are legends who still do shows for the people like it their first day.
9. Gnarls Barkley- What Gnarls Barkley does for me does for me is bring that emotion in a different way. Their songs are deep and I find both albums that they put out to be above average.
10. Ice Cube- Ice Cube is still doing his thing on his new album. Cube still spitting like he is still in NWA. His album "Raw Footage" is just what the album says...RAW!!! Cube just expresses his true viewpoints on tracks without holding anything back. I think he touches on everything that hip-hop and this nation is going through.
11. Killer Mike- Killer Mike came back out of nowhere with freestyles and many features on tracks. I would definitely have to say he's holding it down for the south.
People To Watch Out For The End of 2008- 2009
All these artists have upcoming albums that are expected to be above average whether it because its their last album, or they haven't come out in a while, or that they never put out trash, or that its time to put out that album that the hood's been waiting.

BET Awards Rap Up:
Usher started it out with a solid set of Love In This Club (check out this cover) that was disappointing only because of no cameo appearances.
Kanye wins Best Hip Hop artist over Lil Wayne, and then brings Wayne up on stage with him, praises Wayne, and leaves without saying Thank You to anybody.
T-Pain has a carnival circus performance that is all that is both good and bad about rap. Seriously I thought it was hilarious. Rick Ross is a joke. T-Pain is a joke. DJ Khaled is a joke. But damn it I love the I'm So Hood Remix.
Alicia Keys performs without a piano and then does a best of girl groups and brings out En Vogue... that took me back.
Somewhere in there there was this ridiculous spoof on Angelina Jolie and Madonna for adopting black children from Third World Countries where a black female adopted three white kids and challenged all the rappers in the audience to adopt white kids because it will help improve their credit rating.
It was ignorant as hell, but it was also pretty funny.
Then T-Pain and Kanye won an award and that was just coonage. Tpain approaches the stage in slow motion, while Kanye rants about how great T-Pain is and then adds insult to injury by reminding us that he is the King of this game and so we have to listen to him because his opinion counts. Once slow walking T-Pain (who is seriously going to be the next Flavor Flav) approached the stage he talked about how he couldn't get into this show two years ago.
I don't know it was a lowlight for me, very two years ago in fact.
But the Al Green tribute section was a real treat. Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and Maxwell all sang covers and then the man himself took the stage and just really put on a show. It might have been a lifetime achievement award but Al Green put most of the young current performers to shame!
In a weird twist Weezy F Baby accepted the viewer's choice award with a passionate tribute to God. And he brought up his entire family. Did I mention the passionate tribute to God. Bizarre.
The only thing good about Lil Wayne's performance was the last verse of Milli. Seriously T-Pain ruined it. I think I would have rather have seen Kanye - say what you want but Kanye is going to give his 110% every time he steps on the stage - tonight Wayne seemed like he was still warming up.
Overall the BET Awards was really good this year. I never thought I would say this but BET is redeeming my faith in black people.
Oh, and I want to marry Alicia Keys.
