Album Reviews: The Blueprint 3 & Man On The Moon: End of Day

Jay-Z's The Blueprint 3

Over the past two weeks this has been the topic that I have talked about the most amongst my friends. There are people I know who love it and people I know that did not think this album was up to par. I think BP3 is far from his Jay-Z's worst album: BP3 > Kingdom Come > In My Lifetime Vol. 1 > Blueprint 2. (Out of 11 albums, 4th from the bottom isn't bad right?) Everything else from Jay, I consider a classic or close to it.

I didn't like certain songs when it leaked, but it grew on me when I heard these same songs put together as an album. However, l still can't stand the hook on "Reminder" (even Jay said in an interview that it wasn't up to par & that he was about to cut it from the album) & on "Venus vs. Mars" I don't like the beat/hook but the wordplay is definitely serious. Besides that I really like this album, especially because it has that New York feel to it & it makes me feel proud to be from Brooklyn.

My Top Songs off BP3

1. "Already Home" (if anyone else but CuDi was on the hook I prolly wouldn't like it as much) Lyrics are hard and I like how Jay-Z addresses things that has been said about him on this song.

1. (tied) "A Star is Born" (like the vibe of the song especially since i grew up on everything Jay-Z talks about in this song. It's like a mini-tribute to the rappers who have accomplished a lot from the time that Jay-Z has been in the game.)

2. "So Ambitious" (I feel like this is Blue Magic 2 with the Pharrell collaboration. This song is so inspiring, letting you know that whatever they say you can't do, prove them wrong & do it anyway.)

3. "Empire State of Mind" (You have to be from New York picture everything he's talking about vividly. I like Alicia on the hook too.)

4. "Hate" (KanYe & Jay-Z addressing haters on a song is really funny)

5. "On To The Next One" (This will be a club banger... I really like how Swizz samples "D.A.N.C.E." by Justice into the song.)

6. "Run This Town" (like the lyrical content & the beat, has a NY vibe to it also)

KiD CuDi's Man On The Moon: End of Day

AS SOON AS I HEARD IT, it became in my Top 5 favorite albums of ALL TIME [1. The College Dropout, 2. Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, 3. Marshall Mathers LP, 4. The Black Album/The Blueprint, 5. Common- Be, ...& then there was CuDi]

To be honest I like the whole thing. I think the "Enter Galactic" song could have been better but his lyrics are still there. I thought Common was the perfect person to commentate throughout his album & it is the most original piece of work I have heard in a long time.

My Top Songs off Man on the Moon: End of Day

1. "Solo Dolo" (This is my theme song, I can relate to it in every aspect.)

2. "Alive" (I am a big fan of Ratatat & the electronic vibe matches what CuDi does on the song)

3. "Hyyer" (This song is real mellow & if you get high, it would be the perfect song for you)

4. Rest of the album

Alive - Kid Cudi (featuring Ratatat)

I did not like that the album had a cliffhanger feel to it. It could have had a bettter ending or something. CuDi said that it's supposed to segue into his next album, but that will be two years from now. Overall, I really like it and I'm happy I bought it. It is very creative & I get CuDi's whole concept.

KiD CuDi aka The Man On The Moon

If you listen to hip-hop regularly, and did not know the name KiD CuDi, I would have asked you: where have you been the last two years? His singles "Day n Nite" and "Make Her Say" have been hits on the radio, and he has put out two of the most original mixtapes that I've ever heard, "A Kid Named Cudi" and "Dat Kid From Cleveland." CuDi is now promoting his album, "Man On The Moon: The End Of Day", which will be released September 15, 2009. The album leaked 2 days ago and I have to say that this album is one of the best of the year. His thought process and how he blended his singing and rapping makes this album unique and something that you can listen to from start to finish. I am proud of how CuDi has developed as an artist and I hope he continues to make good music. Here's a clip of him freestyling on Semtex.

Rising Icons: Wale

Wale is an up and coming hip-hop artist out of Washington D.C. He has been on his mixtape grind since 2006/2007 and has been featured on songs by The Roots, Rhymefest, and KiD CuDi. He currently has a mixtape out called "Back to the Feature", which in my opinion is one of the best mixtapes that has been released in 2009. In the clip below, Wale shares his story and gives a live performance for the BET audience. Look out for his album "Attention: Deficit" that is scheduled to be released later this year in October.

Who's Gon' Run This Town Tonight?

Fabolous- Money Goes, Honey Stay ft. Jay-Z (Official Video)

This is the video to my favorite song on rappper Fabolous' new album "Loso's Way". If you don't have the album go get it (especially if you listen to hip-hop for the lyrics and punchlines). In comparison to his last album, "From Nothin' To Somethin'" the production could have been better on this album, but as far as lyrics, Fabolous meticulously laid his verses down, and made this album a breath of fresh air. As far as this video, I really like the storyline (it matches the song perfectly) and the movie theme really works here. Enjoy!!!

...IS STARBURY "SWEET?"

NBA superstar Stephon Marbury has probably seen it all and done it all growing up in Coney Island. However, we do not know everything he has seen or done; and based off what we perceive, we have to make our own assumptions about celebrities. It is seldom for the public to see what an average day is like for a celebrity (without the help of people who find that out for a living). Yes; celebrities have blogs, reality shows, etc. But can you name a male celebrity who has recorded himself on camera crying (besides Perez Hilton) while having a grown man console him, having a morning routine that requires off-key singing, bad dancing (maybe Spectacular), while a man films you while you're half naked (well I guess you get used to that as a basketball player *no pun intended*), and eating vaseline for having a sore throat? I can't recall any celebrity who has. But my question to you is (after you watch the videos): Is it just me, or is this "sweet" behavior coming from Starbury, and why would he show this to millions of people on his web show? Do they do this in Coney Island? Please voice your opinion.

KanYe West- "Street Lights" Video

OK...so when I heard the 808's & Heartbreaks album for the 1st time, when "Street Lights" came on, I immediately envisioned Grand Theft Auto (with a car driving through one of the cities during the night time). Fast foward 7 months later and my vision has turned into a music video!!! Kanye uses animation for this video just like he did for "Heartless", and honestly I really like how it was made. The graphics are very intricate and it matches the music perfectly (unlike some music videos that have been released lately *coughs Best I Ever Had*) What I also noticed is that in all the 808's & Heartbreaks videos, (except for "Love Lockdown") Kanye has limited to no appearances in it...I wonder if that was done purposely.

Comedian Spotlight: Charlie Barnett

Charlie Barnett was an actor/comedian who passed away well before his time. He lived from 1954-1996. Barnett gained popularity by performing in New York City parks- mainly Washington Square Park because it attracted so many people of different backgrounds. He had short roles on television and in movies and may be best remembered for his character Neville "Noogie" Lamont on Miami Vice. At age 41, Bannett died of AIDS and his dream of becoming a well-known star ended. Although his dream ended at such a short time, he has influenced the work of Dave Chappelle and other black comedians. I came across this clip of him today and thought he was worth looking into because over the years a lot of people's work has been taken for granted; and we never know if the same person who entertained us today will live to entertain us tomorrow, but if we cherish their work now, there can be more appreciation. I hope you enjoy & appreciate the clip.

Kanye West "Welcome To Heartbreak" Directed by Nabil

This video has a dope concept, similar to the Gnarls Barkley "Crazy" video, but with more video effects. The video is not actually based on the song, but somehow fits perfectly with it. I must say Kanye's videos are always on point.

KiD CuDi "Day N Nite" Directed by So-Me

In my blog about "Hip-Hop Artists" to watch for, [click here] I mentioned Kid CuDi. He is slowly but surely stepping into the spotlight. His single "Day N Nite" is doing well on the radio right now, and this video is only creating more buzz for the singer/rapper.

Young Jeezy "Circulate" Directed by Gabriel Hart & Terry Richardson

Young Jeezy's album "The Recession" has really grown on me since I have become tired of Lil' Wayne's "Tha Carter III". [As is the case for Lil' Wayne] Young Jeezy is not the best rapper lyrically, but Jeezy's flow and "swagger" on a song makes it hot. It is more of a street album, and it gets my adrenaline rushing. The song "Circulate" has a Curtis Mayfield sort of feel to it; and on the song Jeezy relates money to: himself, the average woman/man, and to America & its economic problems. I like how the video is shot, and the message that Jeezy is sending: don't worry about spending your money unnecessarily, just have a good time while doing it.

Cam'ron "I Hate My Job" Off Crime Pays dropping 4/21

Cam'ron "I Used To Get It In Ohio" Directed By Duane "Bang" Holmes

I also mentioned Cam'ron in "Hip-Hop Artists To Watch Out For". I knew Crime Pays was coming out this year, and if Cam was coming back, he had to knock this album out the park. The first video "I Hate My Job" has a laid back and optimistic feel to it, while the second video "I Used To Get It In Ohio" is more street themed. I like both videos and the idea that Cam is back in the game.

Lil' Wayne "Prom Queen" Directed by Dave Myers

At first, I was not buying the whole Rockstar Wayne thing, as a matter of fact...I'm still not. I did not even like this song that much because the concept of the song has been recycled so many times. Nevertheless, after I watched the video, it made me feel differently. Dave Myers is an excellent video director, and he made the song seem "hot" for the moment. I don't know about rushing to download this song (much less the album), but this video is good (in my opinion).

Page Six News: Has Change Really Come To America???

Yesterday, in The New York Post, the "cartoon" above was shown on page six, causing many Americans to feel disgusted and outraged. This was a reference to the chimpanzee who was killed by Connecticut police, after a friend of the chimpanzee's owner was attacked. However, it is also a reference to our commander-in-chief, President Barack Obama. Does the press have to stoop this low to call our leader a chimpanzee, to get people to read what they call news? The New York Post could not be more unprofessional, and unpatriotic for that matter. Our president should not be depicted in any such way- EVER. We have overcome the times of Jim Crow, and it makes no sense that in 2009, people have the mentality to think that this is a laughing matter. I am ashamed to say that this is not the first time it has happened (The New Yorker, July 21, 2008) and will not be the last. It just goes to show you why The New York Post is behind The New York Times and The Daily News in the number of readers, and I am sure that this "cartoon" did not help any.

Humor Going Too Far?

I came across some videos on YouTube that made me think about the world we live in, black culture, and its music. My roommate Alex (who is white) was laughing hysterically at a video made by the wonderful writers at Saturday Night Live. Alex and I pretty much share the same views on everything that goes on in the world. We laugh at the same jokes and part of our day consists of watching Comedy Central and YouTube. It is kind of awkward watching a Katt Williams special with him because of the excessive use of the "N" word; but Katt keeps it real with everybody, so it didn't really bother me that much. Alex is also a big fan of Dave Chappelle, which is cool, but also made me think: does he go around quoting it like I do or does he say it in his head, and why does it appeal to him? I just never thought about it from the other perspective before (and I want to know what that is).

Anyway, this was all in the back of my mind until he said, "Brandon, you have to see this video". I got off the couch and looked at the video, and this is what I saw...

I actually got a chuckle out of it, but then I thought:

This is what we are calling hip-hop and people have every right to mock it. I take a lot of pride in [HIP-HOP] music. But as proven by the video, all you need is T-Pain on a hook and the record is a hit. I felt embarrassed for hip-hop. It was like Alex was saying: HAHA...SNL is making fun of the music you listen to. It's a shame that the formula to a hit record is: to make a stupid hook talking about nothing important, and say the word motherf*cker and b*ch all through the lyrics, and people will support it. Hip-hop has become a joke.

I have also subscribed to collegehumor on YouTube and I saw this video today...

Was that really necessary??? Yeah, it was supposed to be funny, but could it have been just as funny without using the "N" word? (Again, I can only speak from my perspective) But as a group of [mostly] white guys is it right to put that out there for your mostly white audience to laugh at, and immitate? I was moderately offended by this video, but again this is the way hip-hop is portrayed and I can't be mad at collegehumor for that.

My questions to you are do I need to lighten up or are you agreement with me?

If you are white, what is your perspective on these type of videos and black comedy, (such as Katt Williams, Dave Chappelle) and if it is funny to you explain why?

I just wanted to say that this is just my point of view and I have the same amount of respect for a white person as I do for a black person; I'm just trying to get some insight on why some white people think these things are funny. Why is it OK for white people to imitate blacks (slang, dress, etc) and say the "N" word?

I have two more videos I want to show and you can take it however you want to. My intent for this blog is not to bash white people, because its not right to blame a whole race for something that a couple thousand people are doing (that last part of my sentence might have went over your head).

After seeing this, 3 white guys went in a car and repeated the same exact words as seen in this video. The video got taken off YouTube after months of flagging. Is it right for these guys to do that? Absolutely not. They were loosely throwing the "N" word around in the car like it was no-one's business, and had the nerve to put it up on YouTube. I wish it was up there now, just to show you what I'm talking about, but I can't because YouTube was forced to take it down.

Theater of the Mind vs. 808's & Heartbreak

Today, Novemer 24, 2008, KanYe West will be releasing his 4th album. Last year, KanYe's 3rd album, Graduation was up against 50 Cent's Curtis. KanYe outsold 50's album 957,000 copies to 691,000 copies in the 1st week. This year, he is up against another hip-hop heavywieght: Ludacris. Will he do it again against the self-proclaimed Undisputed Champion of Hip-Hop?

Throughout this year, KanYe has been through a lot of tragedy. He has been through the loss of his mom, the break up with his fiance, and still had to find time to do The Glow in the Dark tour, around the world. On 808's and Heartbreak, he writes songs mainly about these things, this time not in the form of bars or creative lyrics, but in what he calls "pop-art". KanYe defines it as, "...a mixed drink. It’s Auto-Tune meets distortion, with a bit of delay on it and a whole bunch of f*cked up life. And that’s what I call my "Heartbreak". And that’s what every record basically has...I’m delivering what I feel like is art, and that’s what I want to deliver from this point on. The records I’m doing right now might not have high hats and sh*t like everything else has...On this record I’m trying to improve my craft and take it a level that no n***a ever made it to."

Songs such as "Love Lockdown" and "Heartless" shows the state of mind that KanYe is in and it is most definitely different than anything that I ever heard.

I've had the pleasure of hearing this album in its entirety. For the most part it grows on me everytime I hear it. I think its the most different transition an artist has made and it can be compared to the emotion of a Gnarls Barkley record. I can feel and relate to what KanYe is talking about in his songs. People need to give this album a chance and stop putting it down because he doesn't rap on this. Yes, it is all singing from Ye on this album. He has 2 guest appearances from Young Jeezy (who does rap on the song "Amazing") and Lil Wayne (who continues to autotune on the song "See You In My Nightmares". I would say you could not compare this album to Ye's others; and as a fan of MUSIC, I would say that it is better than the average material that comes from some of our veteran artists in the game. TODAY, ON NOVEMBER 24TH, I WILL BE BUYING THIS ALBUM...

Ludacris has created a lot of buzz over the summer with his outspoken views on the election, on the song "Politics as Usual". His mixtape with DJ Drama, The Preview, is one of my favorite mixtapes of this year. He could have made that mixtape into an album and I would have been happy.

Theater of the Mind is very complete and has a guest appearance on each song. I can put this album up there with LAX and Untitled. If you are a fan of witty punchlines or just real hip-hop, Luda gives it to you from start to finish. The album has guest appearances from: T.I., Plies, Floyd Mayweather, Willy Northpole (be on the lookout for this guy), The Game, T-Pain, Nas, Jay-Z, Rick Ross, Chris Rock, Ving Rhames, Playaz Circle, Chris Brown, Sean Garrett, Jamie Foxx, Lil' Wayne, Common, and Spike Lee. I might say that this is Ludacris's best album if not top two. One can tell that, the time he took off was to put everything he had into this album. I'm pretty sure that any hip-hop fan will be able to appreciate Luda's new album and not regret buying it. I WILL ALSO BE COPPING THIS ALBUM TODAY...

I PREDICT THAT...

Ye will do better, numbers wise because of his bigger fan base. I also think that people will underestimate both albums, but I'm telling you that there is no reason why you should. There is so much emotion on both albums, and both albums got pushed back for a reason. They wanted to make sure that everything was complete and that it was the right time to put out their work.

1st week- Ye: 751,000 copies - Luda: 491,000

I think both Ye will go platinum 2nd or 3 week, and by Christmas Luda will go platinum.

Hip-Hop Artists To Watch Out For

I thought it was only right to highlight some talented hip-hop artists who I like, that are up and coming, and who can be the future of what we know as hip-hop.

1. The Cool Kids- My new favorite duo until Outkast comes back out...I like them so much that I have every single track by them and not a single song is a flop. They've been getting buzz from being featured on game soundtracks, performing on late night shows and finally getting play on TV with their new music video: "Delivery Man". They are a MUST check out.

2. Asher Roth- I was a bit skeptical when I first heard this guy spit. I really thought he was just another Eminem wanna-be. But in fact, since I downloaded his mixtape "The Greenhouse Effect" and heard his name being mentioned more and more, I started to see what all the hype was all about and then I was on the Asher Roth bandwagon.

3. Cory Gunz- The way this guy spits is incredible. His freestyles and rapping skills are underrated. If you heard the original "A Milli" version, it really outshined Lil Wayne's verses (which is probably Cory's cut didn't make the album). In spite of all, Cory has a bright future if he keeps putting his name out there and actually makes an album.

4. Curren$y- When I first heard Curren$y, I was not sold. But this was a while back when he was signed to Young Money/Cash Money (Lil' Wayne's record label) ...do you see where there's a pattern? (That's another blog post.) Anyway, I was forced by some friends to hear a song called "Modern Day Hippie". (I thought the song was trash at first). But, it grew on me and I wanted to download the song, but by that time, the song was old; so the only way I could get the song was to download his mixtape called "Fast Times At Ridgemont Fly". (Its in my top 5 mixtapes of the year for a single artist behind Ludacris' "The Preview, Nas' "The N*gger Tape", and The Cool Kids' "Cool Ass Ninjaz" and ahead of Asher Roth's "The Greenhouse Effect") It is a solid mixtape, where he redid some of his favorite songs from other artists in the game. I think some of his remakes might have been better than some of the original versions.

5. Mickey Factz- Mickey Factz was an artist that was associated with The Cool Kids, so I had to check him out. He has the hungriness, that some of our VETERAN artists are missing, and his lyrics make sense :) There's not a bad track that I've heard from him either, but I haven't heard that much material from him though.

6. Wale- Wale has been on the underground scene in Baltimore/D.C. for a while now. He's just waiting for his time to shine or waiting for a big opportunity to be featured on a mainsteam track. I can compare his style to an artist like Lupe Fiasco.

7. Charles Hamilton- This guy brings comedy to his raps, which is what I personally like. Not a lot of people do it, but one person who does it well is Charles Hamilton. He has a song "Neh, Neh, Neh" [*bumps*] w/ Cory Gunz and they both kill it. Cory Gunz goes hard on the track but Charles is right there w/ him and just shows how his style and Cory's contrast, but at the same time the chemistry is there between the two. He also have a song called "Lacey Duvalle" where he talks about being with a porn star. His style is definitely in a word...different (but that's good).

8. Blu- I got put on w/ Blu by one of my colleagues (He's mainly an underground hip-hop DJ and I guarantee that I would be stuck mostly on mainstream rap if it wasn't for him). Anyway this guy can spit. His first album 'Below The Heavens" got a lot of buzz and Blu continues to put out tracks that I like. I can't wait for his next album, because he has a lot of potential.

9. Kidz In The Hall- I swear when I 1st saw the "Drivin' Down The Block" video on BET, I was like who are these two clowns looking like they just came out of an 80's ad, and why are they on BET? So basically, the 1st time I heard it I got a bad impression. Then I went to their myspace and heard some tracks and listened to "Drivin' Down The Block" again... I was amazed. I ended up buying their album and I was not disappointed. They are very innovative with their music with a similar style to The Cool Kids but their rap techniques are totally different. I'm proud to say that they are a part of hip-hop's future.

10. Maino- HI HATER! No, but seriously....if you hated that track during the summer I can understatnd why. But Maino is more than a one hit wonder. He and Kay Slay have done plenty of mixtapes; and since I'm from Brooklyn, I've heard a lot of his music. He just keeps getting better. He has an album coming out soon and I'm looking foward to buying it (and so I can get a free hi-hater shirt. lol

People Who Are Keeping Hip-Hop Alive

1. Lupe Fiasco- I don't know where the game would be w/o Lupe...thats all I have to say and if you don't have any of Lupe's material from mixtapes, "Lupe Fiasco's Food and Liquor" or "The Cool"...you don't like real hip-hop.

2. Ludacris- Luda always comes back strong and ready to punch somebody's lights out. Like I mentioned above, "The Preview" is my favorite solo artist mixtape for this year. "Theater of the Mind" is going to be crazy and I already know what I can expect from Luda.

3. The Game- I think "LAX" is a classic...yeah I said it! I did not find one flaw in this man's album. It is solid from start to finish and you can bump it straight through.

4. Nas- "Untitled/Nas" was the one of the most anticipated albums of this year. I think it lived up to its expectations. I needed songs like "Hero", "Black President", and "Fried Chicken" in my life. I think Nas will continue to be one of hip-hop's best and keep hip-hop alive.

5. T.I.- I'm still debating if "Paper Trail" is T.I.'s best album, but that's because its so good. I think T.I. is doing a good job and has a few more solid albums in him.

6. David Banner- "The Greatest Story Ever Told" was more than what I was expecting. Not only is this man spitting lyrics hard, but he is independently making beats consistently for himself and other artists in the game.

7. Kanye West- Everyone that knows me, knows that Kanye is my favorite artist. The Glow in the Dark Concert has been very successful and Kanye will continue to reinvent himself each album as we grow on with him as an artist.

8. Black Thought/The Roots- It might not seem like it but The Roots are an essential piece to hip-hop (but they have been and will continue to be). The Roots put out "Rising Down" this year and I was shocked to hear that so many people had it and liked it. These guys are legends who still do shows for the people like it their first day.

9. Gnarls Barkley- What Gnarls Barkley does for me does for me is bring that emotion in a different way. Their songs are deep and I find both albums that they put out to be above average.

10. Ice Cube- Ice Cube is still doing his thing on his new album. Cube still spitting like he is still in NWA. His album "Raw Footage" is just what the album says...RAW!!! Cube just expresses his true viewpoints on tracks without holding anything back. I think he touches on everything that hip-hop and this nation is going through.

11. Killer Mike- Killer Mike came back out of nowhere with freestyles and many features on tracks. I would definitely have to say he's holding it down for the south.

People To Watch Out For The End of 2008- 2009

All these artists have upcoming albums that are expected to be above average whether it because its their last album, or they haven't come out in a while, or that they never put out trash, or that its time to put out that album that the hood's been waiting.

Joe Budden- Will "The Padded Room" put Joe Budden back on the radio but still give his fans a solid album?

Sauce Money- Ghostwriter for a lot of artists, Jay-Z put him on earlier in his career. Will it be his time to rise to the top?

Cam'ron- Will "Crime Pays" deviate from Cam's lazy ABC raps?

Dr. Dre- Will "The Detox" ever come out and can the Dr. come back after almost 10 years?
